A common cold or sore throat may readily track down the air passages and produce inflammation of the bronchi, the large air passages leading directly into the lungs. This may produce bouts of severe coughing. In the early stages little phlegm may be produced, but after a few days the child may bring up yellow-coloured sputum and later green-coloured sputum.
