The first shipload of tobacco reached Europe in 1555 and addiction to nicotine has been part of our society ever since. Four hundred years later the serious side-effects of tobacco smoking have been documented and attempts are increasing to influence people to give up or avoid cultivating the habit.

The strongest evidence of harmful effects of smoking on health relate to lung cancer and heart disease.
